JUNE 1991
Cover Story: “America’s Hero!” was the only headline we chose for this cover, and virtually anyone could guess the cover subject without even seeing the extraordinary painting produced by William Robert Laird: It was Hulk Hogan, brother! Hogan didn’t just wave an American flag in the ring to show support for U.S. troops fighting in the Gulf Warhe embarked on a whirlwind week-long tour of military bases in an effort to help boost morale. Fort Bragg in North Carolina was among his stops. “It’s really hard for me to describe how good it felt,” said Pvt. First Class Crystal S. Sain, a journalist who documented Hogan’s day with Marines at Fort Bragg. “Everyone here was so impressed with him.” Oh, and a WrestleMania VII showdown with the traitorous Sgt. Slaughter just happened to be looming.
Eye-Catcher: The complexity of the artwork, the simplicity of the headline
